What placement tests are — and why they matter
Placement tests decide which math and English classes you start in. They do not affect your admission. But they do affect your money. Score low, and the college places you in developmental classes. Those classes cost full tuition. They count toward zero credits. That can add a semester — or a year — to your degree.
One hour of prep can save you thousands of dollars. That's the whole reason this tool exists.
The tests Ohio's public colleges use
| School | Test | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Columbus State CC | ALEKS (math) + ACCUPLACER (reading & writing) | Untimed. Math ≈ 30 questions, ~1.5 hrs. Free. 4 retakes in 2 years (5 hrs of review required between attempts). |
| Ohio State | OSU Math Placement Test (B and D levels) + foreign language tests | 75 minutes, all multiple choice, scientific/graphing calculator allowed. Taken online before orientation. |
| Cincinnati State | ACCUPLACER | 60-min timed essay (WritePlacer); Reading and Math untimed. Plan 2–3 hours total. |
| Ohio University | Calculated placement (GPA + ACT/SAT) or placement test | Placement levels PL1–PL3; higher levels tested in proctored settings. |
| Most other Ohio publics | ACCUPLACER or ALEKS | Check each school's testing center page — formats vary by campus. |
When are they given?
There is no single test date. Placement tests are tied to your enrollment steps:
1. Get admitted → 2. Register for orientation → 3. Take placement tests before orientation → 4. Meet your advisor, who uses your scores to build your first schedule.
At OSU, take online placement tests at least two days before orientation (Engineering students: at least one week before, no exceptions). Community colleges run testing year-round by appointment at their testing centers — proctored, no phones, no smartwatches, photo ID required.
The rule of thumb: take your placement tests 3–4 weeks before orientation. That leaves room to review and retake if the first score isn't where you want it.
What subjects are tested?
| Subject | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Math — Arithmetic & Quantitative Reasoning | Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, rates, number ordering |
| Math — Algebra | Solving equations and inequalities, simplifying expressions, slope, systems |
| Math — Advanced Algebra & Functions | Quadratics, factoring, exponents, function notation and composition |
| Reading | Main idea, inference, vocabulary in context, author's purpose |
| Writing | Grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, agreement, concision (plus a timed essay at ACCUPLACER schools) |
Can you skip the test entirely?
Yes — Ohio has statewide "remediation-free" standards. Meet these ACT or SAT scores and you're exempt from placement into developmental courses at any Ohio public college:
| Subject | ACT | SAT |
|---|---|---|
| English/Writing | 18+ | 480+ (ERW) |
| Reading | 22+ | 480+ (ERW) |
| Math | 22+ | 530+ |
Scores must be official and less than two years old. Qualifying transfer credit, AP, or CLEP scores can also exempt you. If you're below these numbers — or your scores expired — the placement test is your second chance. Take it seriously.

Sample Placement Exam
30 questions across the five areas Ohio colleges test. Untimed — just like most of the real ones. Use scratch paper and a calculator for math, the same tools the real test allows. Answer every question, then submit at the bottom.
